About this model

This model evaluates the equity valuation and cash flow generation of Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), specifically assessing the accretive impact of the $14 billion Juniper Networks acquisition (closed July 2025) and the margin profile of its rapidly scaling AI server business.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise is a global edge-to-cloud company that provides hardware, software, and financial services to enterprise customers. The company helps organisations connect, protect, analyse, and act on their data across hybrid environments.

  • Business Segments: Server (~45% of revenue), Networking (~25% post-Juniper acquisition), Hybrid Cloud (~15%), Financial Services (~10%), and Corporate Investments & Other (~5%).
  • Key Geographies: Approximately 64% of net revenue is generated outside the United States, with significant exposure to EMEA and APJ regions.
  • Business Model Type: Transitioning from an asset-heavy hardware manufacturer to a hybrid model with a growing mix of high-margin software and services, tracked via Annualised Revenue Run-rate (ARR).
  • Competitive Position: A top-tier provider in enterprise servers and storage, and a formidable #2 player in enterprise networking (behind Cisco) following the combination of Aruba and Juniper Networks.
  • Recent Major Events: Closed the $14 billion acquisition of Juniper Networks on 2 July 2025, which doubled the size of its networking business. Realigned segments in late FY2024/FY2025 to consolidate Intelligent Edge and Juniper into "Networking", and shifted certain storage and compute lines into "Hybrid Cloud" and "Server".

The downloadable Hewlett Packard Enterprise financial model includes SEC-sourced historical financials, forecast assumptions, core operating schedules, and valuation outputs in an Excel workbook built for review and scenario analysis.

A turnkey financial model

Live formulas, no hardcoded values

Outputs are driven by live formulas, so the workbook updates from its assumptions instead of relying on hardcoded results.

All assumptions in one tab

Inputs are clearly marked in the Assumptions tab and separated from calculations, making it clear what to change and what to leave intact.

Statements always balancing

For integrated-statement models, the balance sheet, cash flow, and supporting schedules tie through properly.

Distinct schedules for clarity

Debt, working capital, taxes, and cash flow can get messy quickly. We group calculations in clear schedules, not across disconnected tabs.

No hidden macros or external links

There are no unexplained external workbook links or macros to undermine auditability or portability.

Changes flow through the model

Update a key driver and see the impact carry through the forecast, financing, and return outputs. We never use hardcoded numbers in formulas.

Revenue Deep Dive

Server

  • Revenue Driver Formula: Server Units Sold x Average Selling Price (ASP)
  • Historical Growth Rate: Highly cyclical, ranging from -5% to +30% YoY (FY24 saw 32% growth in Q4; FY25 saw slight declines as AI shipments pushed out).
  • Key Growth Levers: Sovereign AI cloud deployments, enterprise AI adoption, and upgrades to liquid-cooled infrastructure.
  • Pricing Dynamics: Highly dependent on component costs (GPUs, DRAM, NAND). HPE passes through GPU costs (e.g., NVIDIA H100/Blackwell) which inflates revenue but dilutes gross margin percentages.
  • Seasonality: Q4 (August-October) is typically the strongest quarter due to enterprise and US federal budget cycles.

Networking (formerly Intelligent Edge + Juniper)

  • Revenue Driver Formula: Hardware Volume x ASP + Software Subscription ARR
  • Historical Growth Rate: 40-50% in FY23, normalising in FY24, then spiking 150%+ YoY in Q4 FY25 due to the Juniper integration.
  • Key Growth Levers: Wi-Fi 7 refresh cycles, data centre networking for AI clusters, and cross-selling Juniper Mist AIOps to the Aruba installed base.
  • Pricing Dynamics: High-margin software-attached hardware.
  • Revenue Recognition: Hardware recognised upfront; SaaS and subscription software (Mist, Apstra) recognised rateably over the contract term.

Hybrid Cloud

  • Revenue Driver Formula: GreenLake Customers x Average ARR per Customer
  • Historical Growth Rate: 10-18% YoY.
  • Key Growth Levers: Conversion of traditional capex hardware sales into HPE GreenLake as-a-service consumption models.
  • Pricing Dynamics: Contractual, consumption-based billing with minimum commitments.

Financial Services (HPEFS)

  • Revenue Driver Formula: Average Net Portfolio Assets x Portfolio Yield
  • Historical Growth Rate: Flat to low single digits (0-2% YoY).
  • Key Growth Levers: Volume of HPE hardware sales requiring financing, interest rate environment, and return on equity (ROE typically ~20%).
  • Pricing Dynamics: Regulated by global interest rates; financing costs are passed to the customer.

Cost Structure

Variable Costs / COGS

  • Line-by-line breakdown: Hardware components (NVIDIA GPUs, Intel/AMD CPUs, DRAM, NAND), contract manufacturing costs, supply chain and freight, and software support delivery costs.
  • Gross Margin Range: 32.0% - 36.5% (Non-GAAP gross margin reached 36.4% in Q4 FY25).
  • Key Input Costs: Memory (DRAM/NAND) pricing and high-end GPU costs.
  • How COGS scales: Hardware COGS scales linearly with volume. AI servers have a higher absolute gross profit dollar amount but a lower gross margin percentage compared to traditional compute.

Operating Expenses

  • R&D: ~5-6% of revenue. Covers silicon development, networking software (AIOps), and server architecture. Software development costs are capitalised and amortised.
  • SG&A: ~16-18% of revenue. Heavily driven by sales commissions, marketing for GreenLake, and integration costs for Juniper.
  • Depreciation & Amortisation: ~4-5% of revenue, split between tangible PP&E and a massive step-up in intangible amortisation post-Juniper.
  • Restructuring: Frequent. HPE regularly executes "structural cost management initiatives" resulting in $100M-$300M in annual GAAP charges.

Margin Profile

  • Gross Margin: 32-36% (expanding due to Juniper software mix).
  • Operating Margin (Non-GAAP): 10.0% - 12.5% (reached record 12.2% in Q4 FY25).
  • Segment Margins: Networking is the most profitable (~23% operating margin), followed by Financial Services (~11.5%), Server (~9.8%), and Hybrid Cloud (~5-7%).

Balance Sheet Structure

  • Total Assets: ~$65-70 billion post-Juniper.
  • Key Asset Categories: Financing Receivables (HPEFS), Goodwill & Intangibles, Inventory, Cash.
  • Goodwill & Intangibles: Represents >40% of total assets following the $14 billion Juniper acquisition.
  • Working Capital Profile:
  • DSO: 45-55 days.
  • DIO: 60-75 days (Inventory was $6.4B in Q4 FY25, elevated due to AI server components).
  • DPO: 70-85 days.
  • Net Working Capital: Generally positive, requiring cash to fund inventory build-ups for large sovereign AI orders.
  • PP&E: Equipment leased to customers under operating leases (GreenLake), plus corporate real estate.

Capital Expenditure & Investment

  • Capex as % of Revenue: ~7-9% (includes equipment placed at customer sites for GreenLake as-a-service).
  • Maintenance vs. Growth: 30% maintenance (internal IT, facilities) / 70% growth (GreenLake equipment, R&D capitalisation).
  • Capitalised Software: Material. HPE capitalises internal-use software and R&D for networking platforms.
  • M&A Pattern: Transformational. The $14B Juniper deal is the largest since the Autonomy/EDS days of legacy HP.

Debt & Capital Structure

  • Total Debt: ~$18-22 billion (significantly increased in FY25 to fund Juniper).
  • Net Leverage Ratio: 2.7x as of Q4 FY25 (improved from 3.1x immediately post-deal).
  • Key Debt Instruments: Senior unsecured notes, term loans, and commercial paper.
  • HPEFS Debt: Approximately $11-12 billion of total debt is asset-backed or directly tied to the Financial Services portfolio. The model must separate "operating company debt" from "financing company debt".
  • Share Repurchase: Active, but moderated post-Juniper. Total capital returns (dividends + buybacks) were ~$886M in FY25.
  • Dividend Policy: $0.1425 per share quarterly ($0.57 annually), yielding ~2.5-3.0%.

Cash Flow Characteristics

  • OCF Conversion: Strong. OCF is typically $4.0B - $5.0B annually.
  • Free Cash Flow Margin: ~5-6% of revenue. FY26 guidance is $1.7B - $2.0B.
  • Major Non-Cash Items: Depreciation, massive intangible amortisation (from Juniper), and stock-based compensation.
  • Working Capital Impact: Inventory swings for AI servers (DRAM/GPUs) can cause $500M+ quarterly swings in OCF.
  • Cash Tax Rate: ~14-16%, benefiting from global tax structuring and R&D credits.

Sheet Structure

  1. Assumptions: Hardcoded drivers for macroeconomic inputs, segment growth, margins, and Juniper synergy targets.
  2. Revenue & ARR Build: Segment-level revenue forecasting (Server, Networking, Hybrid Cloud, Financial Services, Corporate) and ARR tracking.
  3. Income Statement: GAAP and Non-GAAP views, separating out restructuring and intangible amortisation.
  4. HPEFS Schedule: Dedicated schedule for Financial Services net portfolio assets, originations, run-off, and associated debt.
  5. Balance Sheet: Consolidated view, explicitly breaking out HPEFS financing receivables and Juniper goodwill.
  6. Cash Flow Statement: Indirect method, linking working capital changes and GreenLake equipment capex.
  7. Debt & Interest Schedule: Tranches of corporate debt vs. HPEFS debt, calculating weighted average interest expense.
  8. DCF Valuation: Unlevered free cash flow build, WACC calculation, and terminal value based on EV/EBITDA exit multiple.

Key Financial Relationships

  1. `Total Revenue = Server Revenue + Networking Revenue + Hybrid Cloud Revenue + Financial Services Revenue + Corporate Investments Revenue`
  2. `Networking Revenue = Legacy Aruba Revenue + Juniper Revenue (incorporating full year in FY26)`
  3. `ARR = Beginning ARR + Net New ARR (Targeting >$3.2B base)`
  4. `Server Gross Profit = Server Revenue x Server Gross Margin (adjusted for AI GPU pass-through dilution)`
  5. `Financial Services Revenue = Average Net Portfolio Assets x Portfolio Yield`
  6. `HPEFS Interest Expense = Average HPEFS Debt x HPEFS Cost of Debt`
  7. `Non-GAAP Operating Profit = GAAP Operating Profit + Amortisation of Intangibles + Restructuring Charges + Acquisition/Integration Costs`
  8. `Free Cash Flow = Cash Flow from Operations - Investments in Property, Plant & Equipment (including GreenLake equipment)`
  9. `Net Leverage Ratio = (Total Debt - Cash & Equivalents) / Non-GAAP EBITDA`
  10. `Diluted Shares Outstanding = Basic Shares + Dilutive Impact of Stock Plans + Dilutive Impact of Preferred Stock (if applicable)`

Cross-Sheet Dependencies

  • The Revenue & ARR Build feeds the top line of the Income Statement and drives DSO/DIO calculations on the Balance Sheet.
  • The HPEFS Schedule is critical: it feeds Financial Services revenue on the Income Statement, Financing Receivables on the Balance Sheet, and dictates the required HPEFS debt in the Debt & Interest Schedule.
  • The Debt & Interest Schedule feeds Interest Expense on the Income Statement, which impacts Net Income, feeding the Cash Flow Statement, which determines ending Cash on the Balance Sheet. *Warning: Circularity risk here; use a toggle to break circularity for interest income/expense.*
  • Cash Flow Statement Capex lines feed the PP&E schedule on the Balance Sheet and Depreciation on the Income Statement.

Sign Convention

  • Income Statement: Revenues are positive. Expenses (COGS, Opex, Interest, Taxes) are positive in their individual build schedules but subtracted in the Income Statement totals.
  • Balance Sheet: Assets, Liabilities, and Equity are all positive.
  • Cash Flow Statement: Net Income is positive. Increases in assets are negative (cash outflow); increases in liabilities are positive (cash inflow). Capex is negative. Dividends and share repurchases are negative.

Things Most Likely to Go Wrong

  • Juniper Stub Period: Juniper closed on 2 July 2025. FY25 only contains ~4 months of Juniper revenue. FY26 growth rates will look artificially high (17-22% guided) because it includes the first full year of Juniper. The model must account for this inorganic step-up.
  • HPEFS Debt Consolidation: Analysts often mistakenly calculate enterprise value using total consolidated debt. HPEFS debt (~$11B+) is backed by customer receivables. The model must isolate corporate debt from financing debt to calculate a true operating Enterprise Value.
  • AI Server Margin Dilution: AI servers have massive ASPs but lower gross margins because HPE passes through the cost of NVIDIA GPUs. If the model assumes historical server margins on AI revenue, it will wildly overstate gross profit.
  • GreenLake Capex vs. Opex: Equipment placed at customer sites for GreenLake is capitalised and depreciated, depressing Free Cash Flow relative to Operating Cash Flow.
  • ARR vs. Recognised Revenue: ARR is a run-rate metric, not GAAP revenue. Do not link ARR directly to the Income Statement top line without adjusting for hardware vs. software mix.
  • Constant Currency Adjustments: HPE generates 64% of revenue internationally. The model should have a toggle for FX headwinds/tailwinds, as strong USD severely impacts reported growth.
  • Non-GAAP Reconciliations: HPE excludes massive amounts of intangible amortisation and restructuring costs from its "Non-GAAP EPS". The model must forecast both GAAP and Non-GAAP to match management guidance.

Validation Checks

  • "FY26 Revenue growth must be between 17% and 22% to match management guidance."
  • "FY26 Free Cash Flow must land between $1.7B and $2.0B."
  • "Networking segment operating margin should remain structurally higher than the rest of the business, in the 22-24% range."
  • "Total ARR should exceed $3.2B and grow sequentially every quarter."
  • "Net Leverage Ratio must remain below 3.0x (currently 2.7x) to maintain investment-grade credit ratings."
  • "Balance sheet must balance: Total Assets = Total Liabilities + Equity in every forecasted period."
  • "Dividend payout should reflect exactly $0.1425 per share per quarter unless a hike is explicitly modelled."

Hey, I’m Alex and I created Finamodel.

Over my years in the finance industry I kept building the same models over and over again. Same structure, same assumptions, different logo. So I started building frameworks to turn them into clean, reusable templates.

Every model here is one I’d actually use for a client, and I personally vet each one before it goes up.

I’m not an expert in every industry, but I’ve built enough models to know what belongs in one. And when something is completely foreign to me, I reach out to my network for experts to work on our models with us.

Having a template library on hand cuts a first build from hours to minutes.
