How to create a financial model that supports decisions
A strong financial model turns operational assumptions into a clear view of performance, funding needs, and value. The best models are built around the decision they need to support - not simply a collection of spreadsheets.
Start with the business question
Before choosing worksheets or formulas, define the decision the model should answer. That may be a fundraising plan, annual budget, acquisition, expansion, valuation, or debt raise. The decision determines the relevant time horizon, level of detail, and outputs.
For example, a SaaS operating model may require monthly revenue cohorts, headcount, and cash runway. A transaction model may require sources and uses, debt schedules, returns analysis, and sensitivity cases.
Build assumptions that are traceable
Reliable models separate assumptions from calculations and outputs. Revenue drivers, pricing, churn, headcount, working capital, capital expenditure, and financing terms should be easy to identify and update.
Traceable assumptions make it easier to stress-test a base case, compare scenarios, and explain changes to management, investors, or lenders.
Use outputs to tell the financial story
The most useful outputs are decision-ready: profit and loss, cash flow, balance sheet, key performance indicators, valuation, debt capacity, and returns. Charts and summary tables should show what changed, why it changed, and which assumptions drive the result.
Frequently asked
What kinds of financial models can I build?
You can prepare a brief for operating models, budgets, forecasts, three-statement models, DCFs, LBOs, real estate models, and more.
Do I need to provide every input?
No. Add only the context you have. You can refine assumptions and requirements after you continue.
Can I start from a template instead?
Yes. Choose one of the ready-made templates below the form and adapt it to your business.
What information makes a model brief more useful?
The decision you need to make, the forecast period, revenue drivers, planned hiring, funding needs, and key assumptions are a strong starting point.
Can I create a model for an early-stage company?
Yes. A simple model can begin with customer growth, pricing, costs, headcount, and cash runway, then become more detailed as the business develops.
Can I use a model for fundraising or valuation?
Yes. Select a relevant model type and include the financing, valuation, or return outputs you need in the brief.
Can I upload an existing workbook?
Yes. Add one .xlsx workbook, up to 5 MB, to provide existing assumptions, outputs, or structure.
