How to count characters
Paste your text into the box or start typing. The counts update automatically. Use the total character count to include spaces and line breaks, or the count without whitespace to exclude spaces, tabs, and line breaks.
How are words and lines counted?
Words are groups of text separated by whitespace. Hyphenated words count as one word. Lines are separated by explicit line breaks; wrapping a long sentence on screen does not add a line. An empty text box has zero words and lines.
How are emojis and special characters counted?
Characters are counted as Unicode code points. A basic emoji counts as one character, while a combined emoji or a letter with a separate accent can contain several code points. Other platforms may apply different counting rules, so check the destination’s counter when working to a strict limit.
