How this quote works

The customer pays the service/base amount plus the fee and any fee tax. The fee does not reduce the quoted service amount.

Service fee formulas

Service fees can be added to a quoted price or included within a fixed customer total. The correct formula depends on both the fee type and how the price is presented.

Percentage fee added on top

Service fee = Base amount × Fee rate

Fixed fee added on top

Customer total = Base amount + Fixed fee + Fee tax

Percentage fee included in total

Net service amount = Total ÷ [1 + Fee rate × (1 + Tax rate)]

Fixed fee included in total

Net service amount = Total − Fixed fee − Fee tax

Worked service fee example

Suppose a service costs $1,000 and you add a 5% service fee. The fee is $50. If 10% tax applies to the fee, tax is $5 and the customer pays $1,055. When $1,000 is instead the all-in charged total, the same fee and tax must be backed out, leaving approximately $947.87 as the net service amount after rounding.

Choosing the right calculation mode

Add the fee on top

Use this when the contract or checkout shows a service price and the fee as a separate line item. The customer absorbs the fee.

Include the fee in the total

Use this when the customer sees one all-in amount. The fee and its tax reduce the amount left for the underlying service.

Check local fee and tax rules

This calculator provides a planning estimate, not tax or legal advice. Rules on fee disclosure, surcharges, sales tax, VAT, and rounding vary by jurisdiction and payment method.

Frequently asked

When the fee is added on top, multiply the base service amount by the fee percentage. For example, a 5% fee on $1,000 is $50. If the fee is included in the final total, the calculator works backwards to separate the service amount from the fee and any tax charged on that fee.

An added-on-top fee increases what the customer pays, while the provider keeps the full quoted service amount. An included fee is carved out of the customer-facing total, reducing the net service amount received after the fee and fee tax are separated.

This calculator applies the tax percentage only to the service fee, not to the underlying service amount. Tax rules vary by country, state, service type, and marketplace structure, so confirm whether the fee is taxable in your jurisdiction.

For a percentage fee, divide the charged total by one plus the fee rate adjusted for any tax on the fee. That gives the fee-exclusive service amount. The fee and tax are then calculated from that amount and rounded to cents.

Percentage fees scale with transaction size and are common for payment processing or marketplaces. Fixed fees are predictable and can work well when administration costs are similar for every transaction. Use the structure that reflects the cost you are recovering and disclose it clearly to customers.
