About this model

Paddle is revenue infrastructure for SaaS companies, combining checkout, subscriptions, payments, tax, and compliance. As a merchant of record, it becomes the legal seller to the end customer and removes a significant operational burden from software businesses selling globally.

The platform earns a percentage of GMV processed rather than relying on per-seat software licences. Its product is especially valuable to SaaS companies that need to handle recurring billing, local tax rules, and payment compliance across many markets.

The model should forecast SaaS merchants, their recurring and new-sales GMV, payment mix, and Paddle’s net take rate. Payment, tax, fraud, and support costs should be modelled below revenue, while merchant retention and GMV growth within existing customers determine net revenue retention.

A turnkey financial model

Live formulas, no hardcoded values

Outputs are driven by live formulas, so the workbook updates from its assumptions instead of relying on hardcoded results.

All assumptions in one tab

Inputs are clearly marked in the Assumptions tab and separated from calculations, making it clear what to change and what to leave intact.

Statements always balancing

For integrated-statement models, the balance sheet, cash flow, and supporting schedules tie through properly.

Distinct schedules for clarity

Debt, working capital, taxes, and cash flow can get messy quickly. We group calculations in clear schedules, not across disconnected tabs.

No hidden macros or external links

There are no unexplained external workbook links or macros to undermine auditability or portability.

Changes flow through the model

Update a key driver and see the impact carry through the forecast, financing, and return outputs. We never use hardcoded numbers in formulas.

How to build a detailed financial model for Paddle

A complete walkthrough of the business, drivers, and assumptions behind the downloadable Paddle model - distilled from its pitch deck and publicly available information.

Product & value proposition

Single unified platform for SaaS companies covering:

  • Localised Checkout
  • Payment processing & cross-border payments
  • Subscription billing & management
  • Tax & compliance (handles VAT/sales tax globally)
  • Fraud protection
  • Invoicing
  • Metrics, insights & reporting ("Pilot" product)

Positioning: replaces a patchwork of point solutions with one API/dashboard. Acts as Merchant of Record - Paddle is the seller of record, absorbing tax/compliance liability on behalf of customers.

Future roadmap (slide 7) shows redacted expansion modules across Understand / Operate / Grow pillars, suggesting additional product lines under NDA.

Market

  • Global public cloud services market: $397BN (2021) → $692BN (2025); source: Gartner Q3 2021 update.
  • Software Universe (total): $1TN
  • SaaS Universe: $397BN
  • TAM (current focus - SaaS companies $1M–$60M ARR): $108BN
  • Expanded TAM (App Store alternative, once live): ~$30BN additional
  • Implied CAGR of SaaS universe 2021→2025: ~15%

Revenue model

  • Merchant of Record model: Paddle is the legal seller; charges a percentage fee on each transaction processed.
  • Revenue = Take Rate × GMV processed on platform
  • Channels: direct (API/dashboard self-serve) + sales-assisted for larger SaaS co's
  • Pricing page referenced visually in slide 9 screenshot but dollar amounts not readable.
  • No explicit pricing slide in deck. Take rate percentage not disclosed.

Traction & metrics

  • Dashboard screenshot shows a single customer's metrics (illustrative): Revenue £44.76 (today, Sep 14 2020), Transactions 2, Avg Transaction £22.38, Refunds £0.00; Period Aug 25–Sep 14 2020: Revenue £158.04, Transactions 28.
  • App Store waitlist: ~1,500 developers with ~$1BN of GMV on waitlist.
  • No Paddle-level ARR, GMV, customer count, growth rate, or retention figures disclosed in deck.

Competition / moat

  • Moat framing: existing alternatives are "a vast range of point solutions not built for SaaS, all duct-taped together" - Paddle is the only unified platform built specifically for SaaS.
  • Merchant of Record model creates structural switching cost: once Paddle is the legal seller of record, migrating means re-establishing tax registrations, payment relationships, and compliance across all jurisdictions.
  • App Store alternative: claimed to have the "only true drop-in replacement for In-app Purchase"; working with Epic, CAF (US lobby), and UK CMA on regulatory opening.

Team & funding ask / use of funds

Leadership team:

  • Christian Owens - Founder & CEO (founded Paddle 2012; prior: built & sold software businesses)
  • Jimmy Fitzgerald - President & COO (joined 2021; ex-SVP ServiceNow, COO SignalDemand)

  • Andre Vella - CTO (joined 2020; ex-CTPO heycar, Dir Eng home24)
  • Adam Kay - SVP Sales (joined 2018; ex-SVP Global Sales Conversocial, VP EMEA Shoutlet)
  • Andrew Davies - CMO (joined 2021; co-founder Idio acq. 2019, VP Marketing Optimizely)
  • Maryam McLoughlin - General Counsel (joined 2019; ex-GC EMEA MoneyGram, DLA Piper)

Board: Carsten Thoma (founder Hybris, sold to SAP for $1.5BN), Kyle Griswold (FTV Capital), Laurel Bowden (83 North), Steve Chandler (Notion), Chrys Chrysanthou (Kindred Capital).

Recommended financial model

  • Archetype + why: GMV-based Merchant of Record (MoR) revenue model, structured as a SaaS-style P&L. Core driver is GMV volume × take rate → net revenue; this is how Stripe, FastSpring, and Paddle itself are modelled. A pure SaaS ARR model is wrong here because revenue scales with customer GMV, not per-seat. Secondary revenue line for App Store alternative (% of IAP GMV) once that product launches.
  • Forecast horizon & granularity: 5-year model (FY2022–FY2026), annual columns with monthly build in Year 1. Monthly granularity needed in Year 1 to show cash burn vs. fundraise timing.
  • Key drivers & assumptions:
  • Number of SaaS customers on platform (cohort-based; starting count not in deck)
  • Average GMV per customer per year
  • Take rate / blended fee %
  • Customer growth rate (new logos per month)
  • Churn rate (customer logo churn)
  • GMV growth per existing customer (net revenue retention proxy)
  • App Store alternative: waitlist ~1,500 developers, ~$1BN GMV; take rate; launch timing uncertain
  • Headcount growth by function (S&M, R&D, G&A)
  • Gross margin:
  • S&M as % of revenue
  • Scenarios (Base / Bull / Bear - which variables flex):
  • Bear: slower new logo growth (5% MoM), App Store alternative delayed/fails to launch, NRR 105%, take rate compression to 4%.
  • Base: 12% MoM new logos, App Store launches in 2023 with 500 active devs, NRR 115%, take rate 5%.
  • Bull: 20% MoM new logos, App Store launches on time with full 1,500-dev waitlist converting, NRR 125%, new product modules (slide 7 redacted features) generating incremental revenue.
  • Required sheets / outputs:
  1. Assumptions dashboard (all drivers in one place, color-coded)
  2. Customer cohort model (new logos per period, churn, surviving cohorts, GMV ramp per cohort)
  3. Revenue build (GMV × take rate → net revenue; split by core MoR vs. App Store channel)
  4. Income statement (Revenue → Gross Profit → EBITDA → Net Income)
  5. Headcount & opex schedule
  6. Cash flow & runway (given no raise amount disclosed, show burn rate sensitivity)
  7. Scenario toggle (Bear / Base / Bull)
  8. Summary KPI output (GMV, net revenue, gross margin %, EBITDA margin %, customer count, NRR)

Created by ex-finance professionals

Hey, I’m Alex and I created Finamodel.

Over my years in the finance industry I kept building the same models over and over again. Same structure, same assumptions, different logo. So I started building frameworks to turn them into clean, reusable templates.

Every model here is one I’d actually use for a client, and I personally vet each one before it goes up.

I’m not an expert in every industry, but I’ve built enough models to know what belongs in one. And when something is completely foreign to me, I reach out to my network for experts to work on our models with us.

Having a template library on hand cuts a first build from hours to minutes.

Need help finding your model? You’ll find me in the Finamodel app!
